Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is a region full of great diversity and potential. It has many children who are the right age to attend primary school. Recent numbers show that over 182.6 million children in Sub-Saharan Africa are old enough to go to primary school. This number shows how big the chances and problems are for schools and other educational sectors in all parts of this area.

36.3 million (19.9 percent) of these children are out of school. Of those who are in school, about 9 (87 percent) out of 10 are learning poor ie, can not read and understand a simple text at the age of 10
